The default series: Reserve series

Placeholder. The default series shown here is a placeholder and will be replaced in a later release. Its name, id and rules will change; the ideas behind it stay.

A series is a published set of rules. The Reserve series is the one built into the node: poo init follows it unless told otherwise. It is designed to hold value and settle large payments for decades.

The id is the hash of every rule below. Tools name the default series by this full id only, so a look-alike series cannot pass for it.

Why these choices

Fixed supply
Anyone can check the whole supply from the definition, and no one can add to it. In all there are 3.28 × 1018 units, which still fits a signed 64-bit integer, so totals and balances stay exact in every tool.
32,768 mints
A mint is a natural unit for holding and settling large amounts. Holders are not limited: a mint's units split across any number of addresses.
Pools of 32
1,024 pools keep the cost of syncing a pool and checking a peer's weight modest, and each node follows only the pools it needs.
SHA-512/256
A NIST standard from the most studied hash family, with a 128-bit collision margin. No existing mining fleet targets it, so rented SHA-256 hardware cannot be turned on it.
Post-quantum keys
Ed25519 for everyday payments. ML-DSA-65 and ML-DSA-87 for holdings that must outlast quantum computers. SLH-DSA rests only on the hash, so it holds even if lattice schemes fall. The list is fixed for ever.
Threshold and hashlock addresses
k-of-n custody for treasuries and cold storage; hashlocks for swaps, escrow and settlement between parties. Under the 128 KiB ceiling a witness holds up to 16 of 16 ML-DSA-65, ML-DSA-87 or SLH-DSA-SHA2-128s signatures, or 4 SLH-DSA-SHA2-256s.
No issuer
A reserve cannot depend on a key that could be lost, stolen or pressured. The series id, published in several places, is its identity.

A default, not a rule

Following the default series is node policy: each node's own choice. A node can follow it, other series, or both. See running other series.

Follow it

poo init # writes a node policy that follows the default series
poo node # starts the node; peers on :7733, local commands on 127.0.0.1:7732
